Great Conch

Once while kayaking around Washburn Island in Waquoit Bay, Massachusetts, I came upon a live conch, moving through the tidal shallows. I remember the cold green-blues of the clear water, and how the animal was disguised by the rippling play of light and shadow and dancing weed. Like a phantom, it disappeared as quickly as it was found.
